The House

Holmfield is a contemporary self-catering holiday house on the island of East Burra, on the west coast of the Shetland Islands.  Burra is connected to the Shetland mainland by bridges and is a 25 minute drive from Lerwick, the capital of Shetland.  Located in meadows at the end of a road, Holmfield can accommodate up to 4 people.  Each bedroom has a double bed.  The house was built in 2000 and was extensively upgraded in 2019.

Access to the house is over gravel and there are 4 wooden steps to the door.  There is a small walled garden with flowers in the summer and outdoor seating and a table which you can use on sunny days.  There is parking beside the house.  Around the back of the house there are more garden areas which you are welcome to use.

Guests are advised that the accommodation is no smoking and we are unable to take dogs or other pets.  The house is of timber frame construction with an aluminium sheeted roof,  common forms of construction in Shetland.  In storms and heavy rain you’ll be aware of the weather outside while remaining warm inside.

Accommodation

The house shares a site with our own house and artists studio.  We will normally be available to answer queries and to address any problems which may arise.

There is parking beside the house and additional parking outside the gate. Holmfield has an entrance hall with space to remove boots and hang coats.  There’s a kitchen/dining room and a sitting room with two settees and a writing desk. The two bedrooms each have a double bed and large built in wardrobes.  There is a shower room with an electric shower and a utility room with a washing machine and freezer.

Holmfield is a bright house, with all the rooms facing south or west you’ll get the sun when it comes out.

Holmfield has a collection of original art by Shetland and other artists.  Our artists studio, Redhouss, next to Holmfield, is open to the public and you are welcome to visit.  We produce silver jewellery, paintings and artists prints.  Our own house is next door to Holmfield so you’ll be able to contact us easily if you have any questions.

There are usually friendly Shetland ponies grazing on our neighbours croft.  From the house you can walk in the open countryside of East Burra and along the interesting coastline.  The meadows around Holmfield are full of flowers in the summer and attract birdlife.  We often see seals, and otters cross our land.
